Bunhwangsa

Bunhwangsa temple complex dates from the Silla era and is located in Gyeongju, South Korea. Constructed in the style of those in Tang China, Silla architects used stones cut like brick. Only three tiers of the pagoda remain, however ancient records state the pagoda stood nine stories tall. Lanterns in honor Buddha's birthday hang in the background.

Courtyard of the Kathmandu Kumari (the "living goddess")

Courtyard of the Kathmandu Kumari (the "living goddess")

A sign in the courtyard of the Kathmandu Kumari. The Kumari, an actual pre-pubescent girl, is considered a Hindu "living goddess" by the Newari people of the Kathmandu Valley. In another instance of the blurry lines between Hinduism and Buddhism in Nepal, the girl who is chosen to be the incarnation of the Kumari must be from a Buddhist family. If you go into this courtyard between certain hours of the day and shout up to the second floor, the Kumari will sometimes make an appearance. It is a blessing if she catches your eye. No photos of her are allowed, however, as this sign indicates.

Downtown Kobe Garden, Japan

Framed trees in Kobe, Japan

One can not talk about architecture in Japan without also considering the landscape that surrounds the buildings. In this photo, one can pass by one amazing garden after another in the downtown area of Kobe. It is amazing how the landscape artist makes particular decisions about each garden based on the architecture that surrounds it.

Emperor's "carriage"

Emperor's "carriage"

The center walkway leading to many official buildings had this dragon design carved in marble. This was the Emperor's "carriage" or walkway over which the Emperor was carried to the building. No one else could enter on this center walkway. (China)
