Cars in Japan

Cars in Japan

In Japan, as you can imagine, it is very hard to find a parking spot. How they have created space to park is to have garages like this one that moves cars up and down on the track vertically. Another interesting fact is that Japanese can not buy a car unless they have an assigned parking spot at their place of residence.

Compact Washer/Dryer

Compact Washer/Dryer

This is a washer and dryer. Realizing the importance of space in such a densly populated country as South Korea, LG has created a washer and dryer that are 2 in 1. No need to move your clothes from the wather to the dryer in this machine. Although some non-urban areas still practice the use of a washboard and a rope for a dryer, this shows botht he modernization of South Korea as well as the cultural impact that LG takes into effect when creating for domestic use.

Detail from the "Sistine Chapel," Otsuka Museum of Art, Japan

Sybil's knee, "Sistine Chapel" in Japan

The Otsuka Museum in Japan is a curious place. There are hundreds of reproductions of Western Masterpieces, brought to the Japanese public courtesy of Mr. Otsuka, a pharmaceutical tycoon. One can praise Mr. Otsuka for bringing such treasures to Japan, but there is also an oddness to the collection. While the 3 dimensional pieces work reasonably well, the paintings fall flat--they lack the luster of the oils and temperas of not only the originals, but also of painted reproductions.
