The Shinto gate at the entrance of the Ikuta shrine in Kobe is nestled in between the modern shopping district of Kobe, Japan. As you can see the balance between the new and old is accomplished by creating around and over what is old. Behind the Shinto gate you can see in bright neon signs for a store called Tokyo Hands, which is a department store of sorts, think an upscale Craft store with the domestic section of a department store. This type of blending is common, since the Japanese believe that the past is a part of the present and future.
