The author of this article discusses Islam in relation to historical trends that were taking place within Southeast Asia, two countries being Malaysia and Indonesia. As former colonies, these two island nations retained their Islamic identities, how technological innovations improved upon that identity, and the certain Islamic philosophies and ways of life that took hold in Indonesia and Malaysia. These philosophical trends range from Sufism, socially aware groups that helped improve conditions in the island nations, and even radical Islam. At the end of the article, the author offers teaching points for teachers who wish to teach Islam within this Southeast Asian context, and how teachers can go about teaching about Malaysia and Indonesia within the context of Islamic culture and teachings.
