Reading habits of people in Hangzhou and Shanghai were captured on film during the summer of 2012. This photo essay was shared with elementary school students after they had observed and recorded reading habits in their own environment. Students shared the similarities and differences between the readers in China as observed in the photographs and the American readers in their neighborhoods. Assumptions about more general reading trends in both China and the U.S. were further explored through look at researched facts.

This collection of images from the summer of 2012 in Hangzhou provides a great inquiry tool. Jennifer provides directions on how to use it. She has photographed very young children, teenagers and adults most of whom seem totally oblivious to the photographer. This lesson allows one to compare and contrast with your students' perceptions of reading behavior in the U.S.
