Using Contemporary Nonfiction about China to Teach Common Core Writing

This unit includes a variety of short informational articles and a Powerpoint presentation that offer American high school students a look at China. Each article can stand alone or be combined with the other articles included to form a unit of study. The topics covered are, for the most part, interesting to American high school students who will learn about their counterparts in contemporary China through reading these essays and reviewing the images. The Common Core Standards for English Language Arts include a new focus on the reading of non-fiction material across the curriculum, and these articles serve that need well. The articles can also be sued to instruct students about annotation skills and note-taking. Most articles will lead students to research other related topics.
