During this episode, Anthony Bourdain is the passenger. Personally I think travel is best when led by a local. Nari is the best tour guide as she gets Anthony out of his comfort zone. She is truly like the energizer bunny and seems unaffected by jet lag. Food is the most accessible part of any culture. So many families and cultures revolve around food and the dinner table. “A passion for food is a common ground and Koreans are passionate about food and they’re more passionate about kimchi than anything else.” I really like that Anthony Bourdain not only highlights the cuisine of Korea, but all aspects of the culture. It was very powerful to hear Nari’s Grandfather’s story of his escape from North Korea. So many people from his generation have similar stories and it is just heartbreaking to hear his tale. Overall, I would recommend this for personal research about Korea. This would not be something I would show in class due to some language.
